Environment

Definition : "Literate physical environment is used as a teaching resource."

The effective use of environmental print in early literacy classrooms has long been an established practice. More recently, a range of environmental print in classrooms has been identified as a major factor in early literacy acquisition.

In the study, the more effective and effective teachers provided a literate environment for the children in their classes. Their classrooms contained information charts such as the weather and days of the week that were used as part of daily routines. There were also dictionaries, word charts and a range of texts and other resources around the room to guide children's personal writing. These teachers prepared the environment so that everything they needed for a particular session was easily accessable.
