Persistence

Definition : "The teacher provides many opportunities to practise and master new literacy learning."

Studies show that 'outstanding' teachers provide many opportunities for sustained reading and writing practice in a range of formats. These opportunities may include reading practice in a variety of formats, such as choral, individual and partner reading. At the text level, persistence may involve the teacher allocating a large amount of time to reading in order to provide experience in using comprehension strategies.

In the case of more effective and effective teachers in our study, persistence could be seen as related to their 'drive for improvement' for both themselves and their students, and was also a reflection of their 'passion for teaching'. These teachers made the most of every window of opportunity to reinforce the knowledge, concepts and skills that were to be learnt.
